Everyone who has ever had goats knows how difficult it is (without a telephoto lens) to get good photos! Unfortunately, they always seem to move into a derpy position just when they'd been looking their best the two seconds before, and more often than not, just want to be right at my feet. Until I have someone more professional to help me, we'll just have to be satisfied with these very amateur pics!

Daphne is our only unregistered doe. She is second in charge to our herd queen and is basically the brains behind everything the herd does. She was one of our first goats, and had been treated poorly by her previous farm (see horn nubs - she was given a very painful horn-ectomy as an adult).
As we gained her trust, she became a much-loved family favorite, and she has kept her place in our herd. She has a fabulous personality, and is a benevolent, intelligent herd queen. She isn't fond of other does getting in her way, and she believes all food is hers, but she is particularly kind to babies and young goats, even those who aren't hers, and is often seen babysitting a group of little ones.
She is very sweet and dear to us, though she can be a little jealous when it comes to being petted! As a bonus, she kids easily, makes gorgeous babies and is an extremely protective and diligent mother. She also has one of the best udders in our herd! She makes plenty of milk and has never needed assistance to feed her triplets.
Winnie is our current herd queen, and in many ways she shares leadership with Daphne. She's a glamorous chocolate cou clair, with bold splashes of white for that extra flash! She has great width and easily birthed her triplets as a first freshener. She had plenty of milk to nurse all three and her udder was very promising. We're looking forward to seeing her udder develop!
She's a gentle queen who is unusual in that she happily shares her food with her closest friends and isn't a mean girl at all. She never uses her horns for evil. She is happy for Daphne to make most of the decisions, helps the herd by babysitting on occasion, and she is always ready to jump in and keep the peace.

Sunny is an adorable little doe who is a delight to have in the herd. She quickly and easily birthed her triplets as a first freshener, easily nursing all three until she weaned them herself. Sunny gets along well with everyone, and patiently waits her turn in the petting line. She could fly under the radar except for her turns-heads, model good looks. Pale cream in the winter, she's a golden vision in the summer months.

Venus is my "pocket goat." Wherever I am, Venus will be right there, tagging along. She'll even leave her feed to follow me (although she probably suspects that I will have something extra special for her!). Venus is has icy blue eyes, and is beautiful all year round, but when she gets her sleek, polished-walnut summer coat, she's truly drop dead gorgeous. She is a special, glamorous girl, not surprising with a pedigree packed with show champions.

I'm in love with little Audrey, who is such a darling girl. She is a lovely cou clair/buckskin combination pattern with beautiful soulful brown eyes. Her pedigree name doesn't fit her, because this gorgeous doe belongs on a runway. As well as being elegant and graceful, she has a delightful personality. She's a happy, cheerful doe, and she's so much fun to have around. Audrey is a peacekeeper and takes it as her job to make sure there is harmony in the herd. Darling Spice is another stunning beauty, big blue eyes and the beauty spots that we call moonspots. She is sturdy and wide, with plenty of room for a nice udder. We hope when she freshens, we'll see a lovely udder as well. As a big bonus, she is the sweetest doe ever. She's quite a solemn little darling, but I will often find her by my side, looking up at me with those gorgeous blue eyes, gently asking for some love. Who could say no? PEDIGREE MARKS
In brief, this is a skimpy explanation of the Linear Appraisal (LA) Scores and the Milking Stars that are seen on a pedigree. It's a little more involved, but this is the very basics.
Linear Appraisal happens when a goat is scored by an expert from the registering body to determine how close to 'perfect' that goat's comformation is. There are four main categories they look at: general appearance, dairy strength, body capacity, and udder/mammary. Bucks of course don't get judged on their mammary!
The letters you will see look something like, as an example, 81 (VEEV).
The letter designations and corresponding percent ideal are as follows:
- E - Excellent - at least 90% of ideal
- V - Very Good - 85% - 89% of ideal
- + - Good Plus - 80% - 84% of ideal
- A - Acceptable - 70% - 79% of ideal
- F - Fair - 60% - 69% of ideal
- P - Poor - less than 60% of ideal
Superior Genetics: - SG - goat is in the top 15% of milk production
Milk Stars: - *B - Buck's dam is a *M, and sire is a *B
- +B - Buck must have three *M daughters
- ++B - Buck must have three *M daughters and two *B sons
- ++*B - Buck must have three *M daughters, two *B sons, and his dam must be a *M
