New owners sometimes don't realize that goats do require regular attention to their feet. Hooves don't take long to overgrow, and an overgrown hoof can lead to hoof scald, hoof rot, infection, lameness.
Hooves should be inspected and trimmed every 6 or 8 weeks depending on the goats' situation and whether their hooves are naturally wearing down.
In areas that are quite wet, or during prolonged periods of rain, hoof rot can be a really infectious problem, so inspect every few weeks to a month.
In a lush green pasture, the hooves will probably quickly grow over and need trimming at least every 6 weeks.
In dry, rocky areas, hooves will naturally be worn down, and trimming may be required only every 8 or 10 weeks, or may not even be necessary (though it is always a good idea to inspect hooves for splits or other damage, and work on any corrections to the hoof).
There are many great websites and videos showing how to correctly trim hooves, so we won't cover that here.
Hoof trimming isn't the funnest task, but it is necessary!
